Lamborghini

Porsche

Citroen

Ford

Fiat
Fiat Trattori.

New Holland.

Mitsubishi

International Harvester

Renault

Volvo

Mahindra

Formula E | Female Racer Powell To Test For Envision Virgin Racing In Marrakesh

The mid-season Marrakesh Formula E test session will include ‘Dare to be Different’ ambassador and current W Series competitor Alice Powell.

Envision Virgin Racing have confirmed high profile female racer Alice Powell is set to spend time with the Gen2 Formula E car during the first in–season test session of the season for the series. Powell is no stranger to the Formula E paddock, having already made a guest appearance in the category supporting Jaguar I-Pace Trophy championship last year, where the 27-year-old British racer rounded out the podium in both events.

The test is schedule for March 1st, the day after the upcoming Marrakesh E-Prix, and gives the various teams of the series an opportunity to assess up-and-coming talent on an active Formula E street circuit location. The test will be the first time Powell has sampled a Formula E car, having recently made her return to open wheel racing with a third place overall in last seasons debut W Series championship.

Jamie Chadwick and a number of other female drivers could outdrive 99.9% of humans, so I think it’s only a matter of time before an outlier of F1 caliber who happens to be female gets an F1 seat.

I can’t see why you would say that “woman can’t compete against man”. Just because it hasn’t happened, doesn’t mean it can’t happen.

F1 requires physical strength, and you have to be in shape to be competitive, it’s not a sport for anyone. We already had woman driving F1 cars.

There’s a reason sports are separated, man and woman are different, get over it.

To confirm, you’re saying female race drivers are not in shape, yes?

That’s a very deep and original thought, wow. Thank you for shedding light on the fact that there are two sexes.

So your argument boils down to the fact that women (plural of woman, look it up) and men (plural of man, look it up) are different, and women are physically unable to perform the required actions to be competitive in F1. It’s a pervasive argument, but it falls short, not least by a fact your brought up, which is that women have done it before. Also, there are countless high level female racers in the world, more now than ever before. So it stands to reason that a female could certainly make it as an F1 driver.

Yes, a lot of high level female drivers in the world, not a single one of them in F1 though.

I’m sorry, forgot we are in 2020, there’s nothing a man can do that woman can’t! Leave the wahmen alone!

True, it is not just for anyone. And it does require physical strength, but certainly not as much as it used to. Yes, they must be athletic but overt strength is not a factor in many forms of racing anymore, including F1. In fact, they can’t carry too much bulk muscle, it weighs more and they won’t fit in the car, either. As well, I know a few ladies that could whip most guys in just about any physical competition, surely a Lewis Hamilton and the like.

I would submit that reaction times and specific aspects of mental capacity are a bigger factor nowadays, particularly in F1. The cars are quite a bit easier to drive than they were 20-30 years ago (or more).

If you look at other professions like piloting fighter aircraft, there is evidence to suggest that women are physiologically better suited to certain aspects of the physical demands placed on the pilot. Do some research, you might be surprised and enlightened. Or don’t and be ignorant to reality, your choice.

Really? News to me, I never noticed.

But seriously, I’m glad they are as I like women for their many differences.

Don’t be such a “rectal ostrich”, times have changed and so has the machinery. Women aren’t here to cook your dinner and clean up after you, contrary to what some may believe.

Well, one of the attractions of FE is that the racing comes to the people, more or less, and I believe this was not an accident in the development of the series. That said, we have a lot of existing, legendary racing venues and the more they’re used, the less likely it is they’ll disappear in the future. This has already happened to some great, though lesser known venues in the name of progress and development. I’d much rather we still have a Riverside or Bridgehampton over a strip mall, golf course or some crappy tract housing. but I am definitely biased.

The cars are pretty quick, getting quicker and will continue to do so and be able to race for longer as the power plants evolve, which is why i mentioned them.

Not even sure where to go with this other than to say you might want to work on your reading comprehension.

As for women in F1, there have been, albeit not many. I suspect they had little to no support and I think we can all agree you don’t get to F1 and stay there long without it in almost any era of the sport.

While not F1, you might want to look up Michele Mouton as well.

I realize what I’m about to say will not be very popular for many here but. I honestly don’t know why anyone, man or woman would bother with F1 anymore. While the payday and fame might not be as big, for a true driver who loves to race there are much more competitive series to be involved in that would do well at feeding the fire and desire to win. I’ve gone on record with this before but to my eyes F1 has to be one of the most boring series to watch as it lacks serious competition, it’s sanitized, overly corporate and the personalities are pretty bland as well. The latter is not a slag on the drivers personally, I suspect they have no choice as they have to play the corporate game and can’t speak their minds lest they be admonished for it. Don’t want to piss of the engine supplier even though they’ve dropped the ball, right?

Nobody said a thing about woman being only for cleaning and cooking, you are the only one that mentioned that, it shows how it’s engraved in your mind.

Well, like it or not, F1 is where the top drivers in the world are and to get there you have to be pretty good, even for the ones with money like Stroll. He’s very average but not as bad as people say, he actually won F3.

We had a female F2 driver in 2019(Tatiana Calderón) and the results speak for itself.

There are other female drivers in different categories, but it’s not the same thing. Just because there’s a female driver in Stock Car doesn’t mean they can suddenly compete in F1.

Small farm tractor similar to a NorCar?

So I’m new to the forum but my wife and I have spent the last year researching all we can about starting our own hobby farm (5-10 acres, hopefully partially-wooded). I’ll be done with college in another year and we’re starting to look at property around our area. We’ll be doing mostly gardening and won’t have any livestock bigger than a goat or 2 – mostly chickens. We live near Spokane, WA and things here are pretty rocky. Anyway, I’m considering getting a small tractor for snow removal, post hole digging, plowing, and just plain digging holes because I can. Beyond that and hooking up a mower and maybe a chipper/shredder, that’s about all I plan to use it for. Since I don’t know anything about tractors, I’m going to want to buy one from a dealer – so either new or gently used.

I’ve seen a few small articulating tractors and they look pretty fun to use. I was looking at one by a company called NorCar that looks pretty slick but it doesn’t look like they’re in the US – at least in my neck of the woods. It’s a nice, compact articulating tractor and has some nice attachments. I’m wondering if this is something that would be the right size for what I plan on doing or if I need to be considering something bigger/smaller – and is an articulating tractor worth the extra $$ it might cost if there’s even an equivalent in the US, and is the wheelbase wide enough for rocky terrain?

Thanks for any input – I know I might not have a lot to go off of yet, but that’s why I’m asking ahead of time. I don’t want to be dreaming about the wrong kind of tractor for the next year

Here’s the NorCar I was talking about:

Hi Roland – I am also looking for a small tractor. and this looks great.

However, my concern is that the tools (mover, bucker, post hole digger etc) would have to be bought all from the same company i.e. you can’t just get any attachement. That scares me, cause that would mean they are very expensive and/or difficult to get serviced.

I agree – from what I’ve read it comes down to the quality of the local dealer. I liked the reach of the NorCar, but it doesn’t look like any of the local guys have a similar type of tractor. The Yanmar 2450 and the Kubota BX25 are similar in size and it sounds like they run about $16k. I haven’t looked too closely at either of them just yet, but it looks like the Yanmar will take a m />

A lot of attachments.

That is really similar to the OP! Sort of a micro telehandler.

Personally, I think any of these machines need to use a standard skid loader quick tach plate. Then you have access to thousands of accessories, including the USED market.

The big problem I see with these machines is the tires are too small. Those are fine for around the place–gravel, concrete, hardpack–but not as a field machine. 3000 lbs plus load on those small tires is a lot of compaction. You want the tallest tire you can on a tractor to make a large contact patch (better traction and lower compaction).

Good points! I love the look of them, including that Avant, but I see what you mean about them not being the best option for field work. The more I look at options like Kubota’s BX, the more I realize that there probably isn’t any reason why I’d need the tight turning radius of a tractor that articulates. Mostly I just want a small machine that I can plow snow with, till, and move compost and dirt around. From what I’ve been reading, a subcompact should be plenty for what I want to do. Even though a bigger 30+ hp tractor would be fun, it might be overkill for my “needs” I’ll have to talk to a few dealers around here and maybe some small hobby farmers and see what their experiences are with the 20-25hp machines in our rocky terrain. It looks like an enclosed cab adds quite a bit to the price tag too. I may just have to rely on a heavier coat and gloves during the winter!

The 18k price tag of the subcompacts is starting to look a lot better than the 30k I was initially looking at. Wife ran across a nice listing for a house on 10 acres the other day and it was hard to talk her out of it – all east-facing and shaded most of the day, but a great mountain view that overlooked the city.

I was thinking about that too. Also I would be very worried about using the front end loader for much. We have a 6000+ pound 43hp full size Zetor and even with a very heavy 8 foot chisel plow on the back for counter weight it is always and interesting experience unloading one ton pallets of feed or large 1600 pound square bales of hay from the delivery trailer. That much weight on the front makes it bounce way too much for my taste even carried a foot or so above ground.

That is exactly my experience with our tractors. I have to unload trucks time to time with our forks, a ton at truck bed height is iffy. We have 48hp and 65hp John Deere tractors with the rear tires filled and set out at maximum width and implements on the back for extra weight (box scraper, backhoe, etc). I googled for photos of the NorCar and saw one with the bucket lifted way up. Looking at the narrow wheel base it looked rather scary. Always carry the weight low if you’re moving about.

Question for the original poster: is cost the issue? I saw a note about $16K. For that you may be able to get a used larger tractor that still has plenty of good use left on it which will do a better job. I’m not a fan of big iron but my wife correctly encouraged me to get the biggest tractor in its class that we could afford years ago and she was right. We use them right up to their maximum capacity. If I had a smaller tractor there would be a lot of things we couldn’t do and many things that would be unsafe as well as more expensive to do. John Deere, and many vendors, often have 0% down / 0% interest / 5 year financing available, especially in this economy – they’re desperate to make sales. You can talk them down on price by about 20% to 30% on top of that if you negotiate slowly and carefully. I got $55K of tractor and implements for $35K with 0% financing. Considering that inflation is at about 3.5% they are paying me and I get to use the tractor (e.g., the principle ends up even lower). Lots of other dealers are offering similar terms – nothing special about JD.

The point is get a tool that is going to safely do the work.

Porsche is a German automotive company, which primarily produces sports cars and luxury cars. The headquarters is located in Stuttgart.

Its founder, Ferdinand Porsche Sr. (Ferdinand Porsche) was born in 1875 in the family of a plumber, and, having received education, continues the work of his father. But his interest in technology extends beyond sanitary engineering, so already in 1898 he founded a design bureau in Vienna. The first job of a young engineer – the motor-wheel for an electric car – brings him the fame of a talented designer. As a result, in 1906 he became the chief designer of the company Austro-Daimler, where an artillery tractor with an active trailer is being designed.

1909 is marked by two events – the birth of a son, also Ferdinand Porsche (Ferdinand Porsche), the youngest, who is often called Ferry Porsche; As well as the participation of the designer in the rally of Prince Henry of Prussia on a self-designed car, which brought him the second place. A year later, in the same rally, the ambitious designer took the first place.

In 1923, the company under his technical guidance began to produce cars of the highest class, and Porsche himself moved to Daimler-Benz, also to the post of chief designer. His main occupation there is the design and improvement of new compressor engines, including for racing cars. In particular Ferdinand Porsche took part in the development of the famous Mercedes S and K.

After five years of impeccable work at Daimler-Benz, Porsche returns to Austria, to Steyr (also a division of Daimler). There, it does not last long due to the financial problems of the company, and finally, being already a doctor of engineering, Ferdinand Porsche starts his own business on April 25, 1931, creating an independent design bureau that immediately receives many orders from the founder’s authority.

In 1932, Porsche invents the torsion suspension, which is used by all automakers. In the same year he visited car factories in the USSR, but refused to take the post of chief designer of the Union, despite high incomes and privileges. He does not give a refusal simply because immediately after returning he becomes the chief designer of Auto-Union and designs a new racing car. This car for four years puts high-speed records on European routes.

In 1934, Porsche sent a proposal to the German Ministry of Transport to create a “people’s car” (literally in German, “Volkswagen”). The idea is welcomed by the Nazi elite, and one of the sketches is made by the unsuccessful artist Adolf Hitler. Autumn 1935 – the time when the first prototypes of the new brand appeared on the German autobahns. A year later a new Volkswagen plant is being organized in Stuttgart, and Porsche moves there in 1938. But with the beginning of the Second World War, the factory is being converted to the production of army cars – jeeps, amphibians, command cars. In addition, during the war, the designer worked on the design and production of the famous tanks “Tiger”, “Panther” and self-propelled gun Ferdinand.

Due to participation in these developments after the war, Porsche will have to serve 22 months as a simple designer at the Renault plant. In 1947, he returns home, but at the revived Volkswagen plant he has no place, and he follows his son to his homeland, Austria, to design his dream – racing cars. In 1948 the first of them was created – the Porsche-356, presented in an improved and refined form at the Paris Motor Show in 1953. In 1958, work began on the project 901. The car company Peugeot appealed in court the name of the model, and it is renamed in 911. So in 1964 appears Porsche 911 Carrera, which uses the next development of Ferdinand – the engine of water cooling.

1965 – the year when the Targa cabriolet appeared with its characteristic body, so the name became a household name for it. In the late 60-ies begins the company’s triumph on high-speed rally. In 1968, the Porsche S-2.2 took the first two places in the Monte Carlo Rally, and then won the overall European Championship. In 1969, VW Porsche 914, which won the world title among manufacturers, is released. In 1970, the same model triumphantly wins the next rally in Monte Carlo, and in 1971 and 1972 takes prizes in the Safari rally. The end of the 70’s and the beginning of the 80’s is the time of two new models 924 and 944, the middle of the 80’s was marked by repeated victories in the Paris-Dakar rally and models 959 and 968.

The nineties are coming, and Porsche is releasing a millionth car. At the same time, Boxter is launched – a model available to a broad consumer segment, increasing the company’s already high sales. In 1997, the most famous model of the company – 911 Carrera – was radically changed. The newly made modification gets number 996. In the new millennium the company becomes a joint-stock company. The next cardinal modification 911 is made, making it one of the most coveted high-speed cars in the world. Now the company is in the stage of growth and prosperity and produces technically impeccable and high-speed cars for true connoisseurs.
